Mothers Companion users will be aware that the rewriting of history has been going on for quite a long time: forget Wilberforce, Shaftesbury was an anti-Catholic bigot and the most important thing about George Whitefield was his relentless, all consuming thirst for the promotion of inhuman slavery. Things have taken a new turn recently though, and maths is now in for the treatment as well. Did you know that the idea that 2 + 2 = 4 “reeks of white supremacist patriarchy”? I suggest that if you already hoard up precious old history books and pure old story books, you should add old maths books to the list right away! If you don't hoard up such books, start now! Fill every space in your house with them; there is no more precious physical item you can pass on to the next generation!
Seriously, I think it is actually more logical to ditch the certainty of maths than to hold on to it while throwing away the Biblical foundation on which it rests. We all experience (well, all of us apart from the maths professors and teacher-trainer-trainers responsible for quotes like the one above) that 2 + 2 always = 4. What is not obvious is: why. What reason can be adduced for this phenomenon? If you throw away the idea that the universe is the creation of an unchanging God who has made himself known in words like “I am the Lord I change not”, (Malachi 3:6) you are left with arguments that boil down to “that's just the way it is”. As Bible believers we have a reason for 2 + 2 = 4. Keep hoarding the books!

So many people have been using the Covid Emergency Home Schooling UK site that Joanne and I have been considering carrying on with something similar in September. The plan is to provide lessons for only one day per week rather than four or five days. Then, if there is enough interest we can carry on in 2021 and so on. We can fill in the blanks gradually, until there are daily lessons for a whole year – if the Lord spares us. The aim is to provide a resource that can be dipped into as needed or used consecutively. the lessons will be designed to provide a peg to hang lessons on for children of all ages with a little adaption. As before, the focus will be on developing a Christian worldview and lessons will be based loosely round an event that relates to the date. Everthing will continue to be free of charge. I'll keep you updated on the plans as they materialise.
