A selection of original books for children from the Victorian, and Edwardian eras with a few from the 1920s in a similar style. If you like reading reprints of Amy Le Feuvre, Fanny Hodgson Burnet and others you will enjoy getting your hands on some of the originals in this box. These are a tiny group of survivors of the kind of literature that British children were reading when Americans were first enjoying Polyanna, Little Women, What Katie Did and Elsie Dinsmore. The similarities and differences are fascinating. I suspect girls will find this box more interesting than boys. However, the one non-fiction book in the box is described as “A book for boys” on its cover, and R.M. Ballentyne is usually considered to be a boys' writer. Many of the black and white engravings are very suitable for photocopying in enlargement and colouring in. If you do this however please be careful that you do not further damage the bindings of these historic books. A word of caution for parents: the Victorians seem to have revelled in happy endings with weddings and romance. You may think some of these books have a touch too much of this.
